Kaibitz Castle and Inn at the Mill

Highlight • Restaurant

Between the striking volcanic cone Rauher Kulm in the south, the city of Kemnath in the north and the extensive forests of the Hessenreuther Forst in the east, in the valley of the still young Heidenaab, lies Kaibitz Castle. A park with ancient trees surrounds the three-wing structure, which has been marked by time. In addition to the former hammer castle, there is still a completely preserved art mill, the castle estate, as well as the former brewery and today's castle tavern, which is a nice place to stop for a break.
It got exciting when Erich Ebermayer bought the castle in 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II. He was a Berlin writer, screenwriter and lawyer who counted Gerhart Hauptmann, Thomas and son Klaus Mann, and Stefan Zweig among his friends. When Ebermayer first visited the castle on May 4, 1939, he wrote in his diary: "It only takes seconds. I know before I have seen anything that this house is my fate. That I will be and stay here. " The ailing castle was feverishly renovated in the following weeks. Ebermayer explored the area during this time. Swam daily in a neighboring pond, cycled to the nearby monastery village of Speinshart or went to collect mushrooms, which, as he wrote, are called "mushrooms" here. Already at the end of June it was read: "How far is the world! How far is Berlin! ... Here we are really behind the mountains with the seven dwarfs." Ebermayer lived at Kaibitz Castle until his death in 1970. In 1955 he wrote the screenplay for the box office hit "The Girls from the Inner Courtyard" - the story of three girls on a pony yard.
It is easy to imagine that Kaibitz Castle served as an idyllic template. The way he describes the Upper Palatinate landscape, he could also have written "Alice in Wonderland". With the current state of the castle, would it still be enough for a "haunted castle near Kemnath"?

Wolframshof Castle

Highlight • Castle

The object Schloss Wolframshof is a castle. Castles originally served as members of the nobility as a place of residence and administration. A visit to Wolframshof Castle is not possible (but an outside visit may be possible).

Wolframshof is first mentioned in 1054 in a document by Emperor Heinrich III. mentioned as villa Wolframmesdorf. In the 11th century, the construction of a castle on the island in the Haidenaab can also be assumed. The first known owners were the Zirkendorfer, followed by the Potzlinger zu Ernstfeld, the Brucker and then the Gotzfeld (late 14th century). Konrad von Gotzfeld († 1383) is mentioned by name, who is mentioned in the Leuchtenberg fief book. In 1408 the castle came to the Ochs through inheritance and purchase. Hans Ochs († 1445) was given one half of the castle and the mill by the Leuchtenberger, the other half he and his brothers owned as their own. In 1418, the entire property went to his brother Ulrich Ochs. After his death, Konrad Sparnberger, Konrad Redwitzer and Jörg Steinhauser (sons-in-law) and Jörg Ochs split the property between themselves. In 1448 Conrad Redtwitzer zu Redtwitz received the seat at Wolffartzhof and the mill there. In 1468 the castle went to Lorenz Sparnberger, son of Konrad. In 1487, Caspar Sparnberger was mortgaged. The last Sparnberger died in 1634 and the fief fell away. However, from 1617 the Löschwitz were named as owners and from 1728 that of Lindenfels. The latter family existed with Max Wolfgang von Lindenfels (* July 12, 1908, † November 28, 1982) as the last representative of this line until 1982. Maria Sophia Reichsfreiin von Lindenfels, the mother of pianist and singer Therese von, was born in 1745 at Wolframshof Zandt

Was on the road on a Sunday, on the castle tour from Kastl. Both castles, Wolframshof and Kaibitz Castle, are privately owned and you can only catch a glimpse of them from a distance. The castle tavern in Kaibitz was also closed on Sunday. A beautiful walk because of the nature, but the name castle tour is not appropriate.
