The counterpart of Felsenmeer on the other side of the valley. Not as big as there, but with Trombach very idyllic and impressive on the steep climb to the mountain chapel.

Beautiful path below the castle.

A valley and a stream straight out of a picture book. Over small rapids and an infinite number of turns, it goes down into the valley. I imagined what it would be like if a trail were created close to the stream instead of the wood removal path. That would actually be a very special experience. Maybe there are good spirits in the Black Forest Association who will tackle it.

Basically a really beautiful valley and therefore actually a good alternative to the main road. However, the last stretch (approx. 1km) is extremely difficult to drive, not only because it is very steep (determined on average around 18-19, with sections that go well over 20), but because the gravel is so coarse that you actually can't get out of the saddle spinning rear wheel (even with my 50mm tires). So only recommended to a limited extent for gravel and trekking bikes. However, MTB riders should be able to get up reasonably well with their small gears in the saddle.

Visitors frequently enjoy the wild character of Kuhbachtal, a narrow, humid valley where the stream accompanies hikers. Another favorite is the Rock Path by the Trombach, known for its imposing rock faces and mystical atmosphere. The Fuchsbach Valley is also highly appreciated for its beautiful, quiet landscape of meadows and forests.
Yes, the region offers a variety of hiking experiences. For example, the Kuhbachtal features a steadily rising forest path alongside a babbling brook. The Rock Path by the Trombach provides an idyllic and impressive climb to a mountain chapel. For more challenging options, the Sulzbachtal to Landwassereck Route is a beautiful valley alternative, though parts can be very steep and gravelly.
The terrain in these gorges can vary. Many trails, like those in Kuhbachtal, involve forest paths that can be narrow and humid. Some routes, such as the Sulzbachtal to Landwassereck Route, are classified as challenging due to steep sections and coarse gravel. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain, as paths can be slippery.
You can expect to see impressive rock faces, such as those along the Rock Path by the Trombach. Many gorges feature captivating river landscapes with streams and small waterfalls. The Hundsgraben Gorge offers beautiful viewpoints, and the Fuchsbach Valley is known for its serene meadows and dense forests.
Yes, some gorges offer more accessible experiences. The Fuchsbach Valley is noted as family-friendly, with its beautiful, quiet landscape of meadows and forests. When planning a family outing, look for trails marked as 'easy' or 'intermediate' and consider the length and elevation gain.
The gorges are beautiful throughout the warmer months, typically from spring to autumn. Spring brings lush greenery and flowing streams, while autumn offers vibrant foliage. Summer is ideal for longer hikes. Paths can be slippery after rain, so checking weather conditions is advisable regardless of the season.
Beyond exploring the gorges themselves, the Gutach (Schwarzwaldbahn) region offers diverse outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including moderate mountain hikes like the 'Hasemann Hut on the Farrenkopf – Büchereck Hut loop' or easier options like the 'Gutach River – Schnapsbrunnen Vor-Ebersbach loop'. For cyclists, there are gravel biking routes such as the 'Panoramic Experience – Hohenlochen Wind Farm loop'. You can find more details in the Hiking around Gutach (Schwarzwaldbahn) and Gravel biking around Gutach (Schwarzwaldbahn) guides.
Yes, for experienced hikers seeking a more challenging and dramatic 'canyon' experience, the Wutach Gorge (Wutachschlucht) in the broader Black Forest region is highly recommended. Often called the 'Grand Canyon of the Black Forest,' it features impressive rock faces up to 170 meters high and offers exceptional hiking, including the '3-Gorges Tour' which can be quite demanding.
The gorges and surrounding Black Forest are home to diverse flora and fauna. While specific wildlife sightings can vary, you might encounter various bird species, small mammals, and a rich variety of insects and plant life, especially in the wilder, untamed sections of the gorges like Kuhbachtal.
Winter hiking in the gorges can be beautiful, especially after fresh snowfall, but it requires caution. Paths can become icy and slippery, and some sections might be closed due to snow or ice. It's essential to check local conditions, wear appropriate winter gear, and be prepared for colder temperatures and potentially shorter daylight hours.
The Schwarzwaldbahn is a scenic railway line that passes through Gutach (Schwarzwaldbahn), making it a convenient way to access the region. While the railway itself doesn't go directly into the gorges, it provides excellent public transport links to towns and starting points for hikes in the surrounding area, allowing visitors to combine a scenic train journey with outdoor exploration.
While the guide highlights popular spots, the Black Forest is full of smaller, less-trafficked ravines and valleys. The Hundsgraben Gorge, with its beautiful path below Hornberg Castle, offers a wonderful sight that might feel like a hidden gem to some. Exploring local trails often reveals serene and less crowded natural beauty.
