It's no longer worth a visit, as the castle can only be viewed from a distance through the fence. The gardens are also no longer open to visitors.

Something has happened here - the main bridge to the castle has been renewed and paths have been laid out, with further bridges (in the rear part) on the old Alster. Seating and information boards have been set up here that provide information about the former castle. In the middle of the newly designed area there is also a goat enclosure - the goats are supposed to take care of the grass. At the end of May 2024 there was a reopening here with a medieval camp, pottery, mock battles, archery and bard singing. - https://ahrensburg-portal.de/bargfeld-stegen-einweihung-der-burgstelle-stegen-am-25-05-2024 - https://www.bargfeld-stegen.de/gemeinde-info/bargfeld-stegen-heute/burgstelle-stegen-2024/

Markets, historical festivals, vintage car meetings, a country museum and much more can be found on the historic estate grounds! The former Traventhal estate has been the centre of events for over 300 years. The listed buildings, built in 1873, give you a unique ambience. The 80 m long stallion hall and the country museum with their decorative columns, the expressive lattice stable windows, the half-timbered structure of the historic riding hall and other outbuildings characterise the picture. The events are particularly suitable for a family outing. A petting zoo, railway, pony rides, carousels and much more are on offer for the youngest guests. Adults can enjoy the country museum between historical equipment and old carriages. You can discover many unusual things among the many interesting exhibitors and artisans. The Traventhal country market takes you back to old times. "Baroque horsepower" is not only on display there, but also at the vintage car meeting. While having a pleasant chat, you can try the tasty Traventhaler Hengst beer, brewed in the country brewery. https://www.binnenland.sh/kultur-und-tradition/details/geo/detail/landgestuet-traventhal-4459

Unfortunately, you can't see much (anymore). A rather low hill, surrounded by tall trees. Stegen Castle was a moated castle on the Alte Alster, first mentioned in 1302 and expanded over the years around 1340. The fun was financed primarily with tolls between the Elbe and the Baltic Sea. The damming of the Alster for the castle moat meant that the water level was too low to operate the mills downstream and shipping on the Alster was no longer possible. This and earlier plundering of the castle lord led to the then Danish King Waldemar III intervening on his return journey from Palestine. After a siege, the castle lord was sent into exile in return for a large sum of money. Stegen Castle was demolished and never rebuilt.

A herd of goats is roaming through changing meadows to curb the wild growth. A shelter and seating have been built and the area appears to be being expanded...

The dukes of Plön and Danish kings once enjoyed themselves here. Today antique markets, classic car meetings and horse shows.
