The chapel ⛪️ impressively built into the mountain is absolutely worth seeing and the climb is worth it. You can even light a candle 🕯 here.

The river of the same name originates from the 5-6m deep spring at Birnbachloch. The tour up to here is absolutely worthwhile 😃.

The idea of hermits is not a Christian idea, its origins go back to pre-Christian times. Nevertheless, the hermitage on the Palfen in Saalfelden was founded on purely Christian beliefs. From around 1560, an image of Saint George was venerated in a rock cave above Lichtenberg Castle. This prompted a certain Thomas Pichler, a mountain farmer's son from Embach who belonged to the Order of Saint Francis, to obtain permission from the archbishop's consortium in Salzburg in 1664 to settle as a hermit above Lichtenberg Castle. With the help of his fellow believers, he built a small hermitage on the Palfen and converted the cave with the image of Saint George into a chapel. Brother Thomas was a hermit on the Palfen for 35 years. He was followed by other hermits, some of whom undertook some renovations and extensions. Today, the hermitage is no longer exclusively a Christian place of worship, but is also a popular destination for locals and tourists. Today's hermits serve drinks in the summer months to supplement their modest finances. A mass is held at Palfen on April 23 of each year, St. George's Day. The hermitage was built in the 17th century above Lichtenberg Castle. The 34th hermit has been Matthias Gschwandtner from Bad Ischl since June 2020,[2] as the successor to the Belgian Stan Vanuytrecht.[3] The current hermit was chosen through a competition. The word "Palfen" originally meant an overhanging rock, a rocky peak or a cave.

The region around Maishofen offers a variety of impressive sites. Highly rated by visitors are the Birnbach Cave, known for its karst spring, and the historical Hermitage and Chapel at Bachwinkl. Further afield, but well worth the journey, are Lamprechtshöhle, one of Europe's largest through-caves, and Eisriesenwelt Werfen, the world's largest ice cave.
Yes, several options are suitable for families. Lamprechtshöhle offers a well-secured public section with a 700-meter hike into the mountain, making it accessible for children. The Seisenbergklamm (Seisenberg Gorge), while not a cave, is an accessible natural monument with wooden walkways and interactive elements that engage children, including a 'gorge ghost' legend. The Birnbach Cave is also easily accessible for a natural spectacle.
The region boasts diverse geological wonders. At Birnbach Cave, you can witness a powerful karst spring where the Birnbach stream emerges and cascades down the mountain. Lamprechtshöhle features underground lakes, waterfalls, and gorges. Eisriesenwelt Werfen is renowned for its magnificent ice formations and crystalline 'ice palaces,' including the over nine-meter-high 'Great Iceberg.' The Seisenbergklamm gorge showcases dramatic rock formations carved by water, with a unique 'dark green jungle' environment.
Absolutely. The Hermitage and Chapel at Bachwinkl, and the Hermitage at Palfen, are significant rock cave sites that have served as pilgrimage destinations since the 16th century. They blend religious history with stunning natural scenery. Additionally, Kühloch Cave has yielded isolated Bronze Age finds, making it of interest to amateur archaeologists.
Many caves, like Lamprechtshöhle, maintain a constant cool temperature (4-6°C) year-round, making them a refreshing escape on warm summer days. Eisriesenwelt Werfen is typically open from May to October. The Seisenbergklamm gorge is particularly impressive in spring when snowmelt increases the waterfalls' power. For outdoor caves like Birnbach Cave or Kühloch Cave, warmer months offer more comfortable hiking conditions.
Even on warm days, it's advisable to bring warm clothing, such as a jacket or sweater, for caves like Lamprechtshöhle and Eisriesenwelt Werfen, which maintain very low temperatures. Sturdy, non-slip footwear is essential for navigating potentially wet or uneven terrain. For guided tours, specific equipment might be provided, but generally, a headlamp or flashlight can be useful for exploring less illuminated areas.

Yes, guided tours are available for some of the larger cave systems. Lamprechtshöhle offers guided lantern hikes that provide insights into the cave's history and legends. Eisriesenwelt Werfen provides 75-minute guided tours covering scientific and historical facts about the ice cave. For other sites, self-guided exploration is common.
