September 13, 2026, Chalupská Slať Peat Bog Trail

Access to the protected area is not permitted off the trail. The trail is supplemented by a number of information boards, allowing you to learn all about this beautiful peat bog, dominated by the dark eye of the pond. Chalupská slať is a transitional area between the valleys along the Vltava and Křemelná rivers and the mountainous highlands of the Šumava plateau. The slať has an irregular shape and is dotted with a number of floating islands with typical peat vegetation. During the summer months, these islands provide a safe haven for mallards, which have become accustomed to the presence of people. Chalupská slať has been affected by peat extraction in the past (approx. 50 ha). These are the parts of the slať where dwarf pines do not grow and which are gradually overgrown with downy birches.

Chalupská slať lies in the shallow valley of the Vydříh potok stream at an altitude of 910 meters, north of Borová Lada. Around the largest peat lake in the Czech Republic grow peat, sedge, sedge-pine and Scots pine. A short nature trail leads through the peat area to the lake, where floating islets. A high-lying peat bog less than 1 km north of the village of Borová Lada with the largest peat lake (1.3 ha) in the Czech Republic. The Chalupská slať began to form after the end of the ice age, 8 to 10 thousand years ago. The basis for the formation of the peat bog was a shallow pond, which first became overgrown with reeds and sedge, and only later with peat moss. This resistant moss occurs in about 20 species in the peat bog. The peat bog is accessible from the parking lot via an asphalt road and a gravel path. There is also an educational trail about 250 meters long that provides access to a part of the peat bog with a peat lake.
