Hello, my laptop speakers sounded tinny, the sound cut out at louder settings, and the videos were barely understandable. After a long dry spell on other sites, a colleague recommended https://capo-spin.at/bonus , and I took a bit more risk. For players in Austria, the processes are transparent, and the winnings were enough for a pair of active desktop speakers with 20 watts RMS, separate tweeter, and sound control. The sound is now clear, the movies sound full, and the video conferences are finally productive without constant asking again.

Ok, the photos do not do justice to this stunning chamber! It was only "opened" to the show cave in 2015! (The last time I visited was in 1990!!) The caves are still explored very regularly by cave divers, and the decision was made to connect chamber 9 to chamber 20 via a tunnel in 2015. What is visible in the images is the result of melt-water from the end of the last ice age. It has sculpted the rocks into valleys, ridges and crevasses. It is, as far as we know, the largest example of this in the whole of the UK.

It's like a miniature Ebbor Gorge meets tellytubby land. Well worth a walk.

This popular cavern is set into limestone rock and is particularly beginner friendly. You can find some hand railings inside to help you, dating back from the early 20th century when it was being (unsuccessfully) turned into a show cave like the other Mendip caves of Wookey and Cheddar. Goatchurch is a popular cave for beginners and school trips thanks to its general ease and its two entrances. Access is free, however, caving can be dangerous and you shouldn't attempt it without a capable guide if you're new to caving. This cave is considered relatively straightforward but still has technical areas, tight squeezes and shouldn't be undertaken lightly.

Ebbor Gorge is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and National Nature Reserve(NNR). Dramatic limestone gorge with interesting caves of important past climate research. Its ancient woodland combes are rich in wildlife and of the Mendip Hills AONB's special qualities

Ebbor Gorge is a magnificent limestone gorge within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Designated as a national nature reserve, the mixed woodland and deep gorge is home to much flora and fauna, including 250 species of mosses, liverworts and lichens. The caves within the gorge were inhabited by neolithic people and flint tools have been found. The path through the gorge is steep, rocky, wet and muddy. If you have decent footwear and average fitness, you’ll be fine. If you are planning to complete the round walk, I’d recommend going up the gorge (it’s so much fun you don’t notice the effort) and down the meadows (as the views are amazing and with you for the whole descent).

The area around West Harptree, particularly within the Mendip Hills, offers a diverse range of geological features. You can find active streamway caves, dry passages, and challenging systems. Notable examples include Ebbor Gorge, which features a path through a primeval forest with steep, rocky steps, and Charterhouse SSSI, which includes caves in limestone rock and Roman lead and silver mines.
Yes, Goatchurch Cavern is particularly beginner-friendly and popular for school trips. It features two entrances and predominantly dry passages, and while it has some technical areas and tight squeezes, it doesn't require specialized equipment like ropes or ladders. Remnants of old handrails from an attempt to turn it into a show cave can still be found inside.
For experienced cavers seeking a challenge, Swildon's Hole in Priddy is the longest cave in the Mendip Hills. It features an active streamway with low crawling passages, impressive chambers, drops, and thundering waterfalls. It's known for its challenging sumps and often requires several hours to navigate, even for experienced individuals.
Yes, Wookey Hole Caves is a popular family-friendly attraction. It's billed as one of the most impressive and largest show caves in Europe, offering a host of activities beyond just cave exploration. The caves themselves have been used by humans for around 45,000 years.
The caves and surrounding areas offer rich historical context. For instance, Charterhouse SSSI includes Roman lead and silver mines. Goatchurch Cavern contains ritual protection marks dating back to 1550-1750. Lamb Leer Cavern, discovered by lead miners around 1676, was even a tourist attraction at one point and holds geological sediments valuable for studying ancient environmental conditions.
Access to Lamb Leer Cavern is generally not permitted to the public. It requires abseiling down a long shaft and involves challenging conditions, including muddy formations and tunnels. Its historical and geological significance makes it a remarkable, albeit restricted, example of Mendip caving. You can learn more about its history on Wikipedia.
Beyond caving, the area offers excellent opportunities for other outdoor activities. You can find numerous routes for hiking, including moderate trails like the 'Butcombe Trail: Litton Reservoirs Loop' or easier options such as the 'Chew Valley Lake loop from West Harptree'. There are also many cycling routes, ranging from moderate to difficult, like the 'Cheddar Market Cross loop from West Harptree'.
While some caves like Goatchurch Cavern offer free access, caving in the Mendip Hills, especially in more challenging systems like Swildon's Hole, often requires permits or membership with caving clubs due to safety and conservation reasons. It's crucial to check specific access requirements for each cave before planning your visit, and never attempt caving without proper experience or a capable guide.
The best time to visit depends on the type of caving you plan to do. For show caves like Wookey Hole, they are generally open year-round. For wild caving, drier periods might be preferable to avoid high water levels, especially in active streamway caves like Swildon's Hole. Always check weather conditions and cave-specific advice before your trip, as seasonal hazards can occur.
Visitors frequently highlight the varied and scenic routes, the unique geological formations, and the sense of adventure. For example, Ebbor Gorge is praised for its 'beautiful varied circular route with rocky climb' and 'primeval forest'. The historical aspects, such as the Roman mines at Charterhouse SSSI, also add significant appeal.
Goatchurch Cavern is often cited as suitable for self-guided exploration for beginners, as it doesn't require specialized equipment. However, even in relatively straightforward caves, caving can be dangerous. It is always recommended that new cavers go with someone experienced or a capable guide, and never alone.
