Grinton Moor Climb – Greets Moss Summit

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

A nice scenic 'roof of the world' type climb of 2.5 miles at an average of 7%, steepest in the first half. Pub in Grinton to have a brew before you tackle it. Was memorable climb with some 'endless sky' photo opportunities.

Number 51 in Simon Warren's list of 100 greatest climbs, Tan Hill is a long 10km drag to the top from its start point near Whaw. It heads to the north west from here so if you're travelling in the opposite direction, you have a lovely shallow descent to enjoy.

The climb has an average gradient of 2% but with a kicker near the top of 10% so save a little energy for that as you summit.

Top of The Fleak

Highlight • Summit

Climbing out of Swaledale to Askrigg, this is one of the tougest local climbs with stunning views for the moments when not chewing the handlebars. A series of ramps climb away from the river each with a little respite. There's a significant & welcome downhill, before hostilities are resumed with a bang! A drag leads to a nasty short ramp. 20% near the top. Vicious. Defeat this & there's some easy climbing and great views. The road turns upwards again, sweeping steeply towards the top, briefly hitting 20% again. If you can look behind/left the view is again stunning. A couple more ramps won't trouble you if you have got this far as you top out at 545m.

The descent to Askrigg needs a little care. When you get to the level of the trees, the road narrows and there is a steep right hand corner with poor visibility. Watch out for gravel in the corners immediately following.

Good, wasn't it?

Jenny Hill

Highlight • Summit

The start of Arkengarthdale. The road takes you out of Reeth & the wildness of the valley is immediately apparent.

Rout options are the long drag to Tan Hill (avoid when there is a westerly, it can take forever!) or left at the CB Inn up Bouldershaw or right shortly after to climb The Stang.

Leave some extra time if you’ve enjoyed the food at Dales Bike Centre Café. Also be prepared for the Stang or more climbs after this starter

So remote, so windswept, so starkly beautiful. The climb goes on and on for mile after mile of nothingness, but it's never steep or too challenging, and there's a nice pint waiting for you at the summit
