October 16, 2026, Sharon Creek Reservoir / Springer Lake

Springer Lake is the main feature at Sharon Creek and a really nice spot to slow down for a while. The reservoir is surrounded by forest and wetland, and you can canoe or fish here for bass, pike and walleye. Swimming isn’t allowed, and motorized watercraft are prohibited, which keeps it feeling pretty peaceful. If you’re walking the trails, it’s worth taking a detour down to the shoreline for a break.

The tallgrass prairie is one of the most interesting parts of Sharon Creek, especially if you’re used to seeing mostly forest on Ontario trails. It covers about 2.8 hectares and is the largest publicly accessible tallgrass prairie in Middlesex County. The grasses get surprisingly tall later in the season, with native wildflowers mixed in throughout, so summer and early autumn are especially nice times to visit.

There are over 100 species in this area, with chances to spot or hear woodland favourites such as the Scarlet Tanager, Cooper’s Hawk, Indigo Bunting, Eastern Wood-Pewee, and Pine Warbler. Bring binoculars and let the trail get wonderfully noisy.

From here you can access the 20-hectare Lower Dingman Environmentally Significant Area, a protected rural forest within London’s city limits. Set on the gently rolling Ingersoll Moraine, shaped by glaciers around 13,000 years ago, the area mixes reforested land, creekside habitat and quiet trails on the traditional territory of the Attawandaron, Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Lunaapeewak peoples.

The Sydenham River winds for more than 250 kilometres through southwestern Ontario before emptying into Lake St. Clair, supporting one of Canada’s richest freshwater ecosystems. This quiet branch through the conservation area provides habitat for turtles and fish, and is home to numerous waterfowl and other bird species. Its picturesque banks create a peaceful natural setting in the heart of the community.
