April 10, 2023, Rotavské Varhany Basalt Columns

Stone pipes in the deep forest The natural monument of “Rotava” is a relic of a Tertiary volcano with an excellent example of the columnar form of basalt excretion. The wall of the former quarry is built up of up to 12 m high basalt columns, which resemble organ pipes. The columns were formed due to internal stresses as the volume of the basaltic lava decreases as it cools. From the top there is a wonderful view of the town of Rotava and its surroundings. The locality is a station of a planned educational trail to geological and mining sights around Rotava. Other stations are abandoned clay pits, isolated quartzite blocks (sluňáky), the rocky gorge of the Skřivánčí stream with imposing granite rocks, giant pots and even evidence of seismic activity in the region. You can see the occurrence of ore deposits at the mouth of an exploratory tunnel. http://www.geopark.cz/en/rotava-rothau

The information board explains in German a few things about the environment and peat bogs. The refuge gave us a nice break on a thoroughly rainy, foggy day before continuing on a boardwalk through the moor.
