Barsvatn (also written Barsvatnet) is a small mountain lake high in the interior of Seiland, reachable on foot from Neverfjord–Náivuotna via the old mining road up Vesterdalen. It sits in a rugged, almost untouched Arctic landscape of bare rock, heath and tarns, and feeds a clear stream that runs down the valley toward the fjord.

Neverfjord–Náivuotna is a small coastal village on the island of Seiland in Hammerfest municipality. Its dual name reflects local heritage: “Neverfjord” (Norwegian, roughly “tinder fjord”) and “Náivuotna/Návvuotna” (Northern Sámi, interpreted as “cowshed fjord”).

What you see here is a landscape of solidified melt. Large parts of Seiland consist of igneous rock, primarily gabbro, a dark intrusive rock that cooled slowly deep within the Earth's crust. This makes the island geologically special. Many gabbro bodies are clearly layered, and such rock packages are rare worldwide.

At Storvannet on Seiland, there is an open barbecue hut on a narrow spit of land that extends far into the lake. You can only get here by ferry and then across an island where not much is going on. Between May and October is a good time for this tour. Bring what you need.

This picnic spot is located at the first two waterfall stages, wonderful for a rest. The view looks out onto the Lillefjord, a few steps away also onto the waterfall of the Fossenelva itself, which tumbles down wonderful cascades here. Further down, towards the parking lot, there is an even larger rest area, also very suitable for children.
