Ponds of Parc des Côtes Montbron

Highlight • Lake

The natural treasures of the Parc des Côtes Montbron:
Located in the town of Jouy-en-Josas, the Parc des Côtes Montbron, acquired by the Department for sensitive natural areas, has been open to the public since April 2011. Hikers and nature lovers can enjoy a break idyllic in the heart of this exceptional site.
It was part of the estate of the Château du Parc des Côtes Montbron, which became a center for infantile cardiology in 1952, belonging to the Mallet family, who had the château built between 1872 and 1875. This hidden valley reveals its stream, the Ru Saint, to the walker. Marc, and its three ponds bordered by meadows and woods. This mosaic of natural environments gives it great ecological wealth. It also offers a bucolic setting allowing a total change of scenery, while being located a few kilometers from Paris. It is also accessible by public transport (Petit Jouy station served by line C of the RER).
The Department has created three new entrances, providing access to 2.5 km of trails through the site. The CODERANDO des Yvelines has put in place the markings for the GR® of the Ile de France region which crosses the site. This route is decorated with information panels on the themes of the landscape, flora and aquatic environments.

Latona Fountain

Highlight • Monument

The Latona basin results from the desire of Louis XIV to create, in the center of his Garden, a fountain which recounts the childhood of Apollo, the sun god he chose as his emblem. To create this fountain, Louis XIV transformed a pool dug by Louis XIII by gradually installing water features and decorations sculpted by the Marsy brothers. The Latona basin went through several states before adopting its current form. In 1667, it was the Toad Fountain. From 1668 to 1670, a first Latona basin appeared; Latona is then at the same level as the other figures and turned towards the Castle. From 1687 to 1689, Jules Hardouin-Mansart created the current pool, by making Latona turn around and hoisting her to the top of a marble pyramid.

La Troche Quarry

Highlight • Climb

The Troche quarry is today located in the very heart of the Eugène Chanlon Municipal Park, in Orsay-Palaiseau, in the Lozère (Palaiseau) district.
This is an old sandstone quarry, traces of which can be found on the edge of the Saclay plateau, where a whole plateau of industries is currently located.

All that remains of the quarry today is the working face, 5 meters high and approximately 200 meters long. Today it is only used by rock climbing enthusiasts.

In the lower part, approximately in the center, you can see a Romanesque window... but it actually only dates from 2004!

A little history
The exploitation of this quarry has been documented since 1720.
It was mentioned in Napoleon's land registers in 1809.

At the end of the 19th century, the quarry was owned by the Pigeon family, and employed 25 to 30 workers.
Work was interrupted at harvest time because the quarrymen, very often, were also agricultural workers.
"The production was intended for Paris, brought down twice a day to Lozère station from 1867 by carts pulled by 3 horses, loaded with 120 paving stones (around 2 tonnes), and transferred to wagons using an additional track for goods (1891).”

“Before the railway, it took two days round trip for a cart to reach Paris”

The quarry closed its doors in 1937, and today it is more than a souvenir that can be discovered inside Eugène Chanlon Park.

The stone extracted from this quarry is sandstone. These so-called Fontainebleau sandstone and sand banks were formed in the Quaternary era (Stampian period) around 30 million years ago.

Old Chestnut Tree at Place Audran

Highlight • Natural Monument

For 10 years, the "Tree of the Year" competition has rewarded trees from different regions of France. The trees are selected for their aesthetic, biological, historical quality... This chestnut tree from La Celle St Cloud won the Public Prize at the end of 2021.
If you take the time to admire this solitary colossus, or even to sit in the shade of its foliage, you will notice the irregularities of its trunk which take the form of helical grooves. Specialists say that the tree is "screwed".
An estimated 330 years old, it was planted during the reign of Louis XIV and now measures 18 meters wide and 12 meters high. In the 17th and 18th centuries this species of tree was planted in large numbers because it made it possible to offer the people chestnuts and to make flour. Before the introduction of the potato in Europe, it was one of the methods to fight against the famines that raged in the country.
Formerly the district was composed of wooded plots and vast pastures. The chestnut tree was thus able to develop without local competition in the middle of a meadow.
Like the court of Versailles, he must have heard in the distance the muffled noises of the French Revolution which announced the end of the world which had seen him born and grow up. Later he saw the plumes of smoke from the Industrial Revolution appearing on the horizon. The installation of a station not far away and the arrival of the train from Paris brought it perhaps the company of the first walkers who came to rest under its foliage.
But it was from 1920 that the first constructions appeared. In 1930 there were seven houses in the subdivision. Then the houses and pavilions multiplied and were accompanied by cars. The road had to be paved and the question of the very existence of the tree no doubt arose. A small place was then arranged for him.
At present the majestic chestnut tree is in the heart of a residential district itself included in the frenetic Parisian agglomeration. Cars, vans, scooters and motorcycles come and go around him, mostly without noticing him.
It is undoubtedly the symbolic power of his position that struck the spirits and allowed him to acquire his title. Stubbornly resistant to urban development, he is a precious witness to the mad march of the world. A being apart who watches men move about, and perhaps observes them with commiseration.

This pseudo-megalithic site is located under the large Chêne des Missions. It was built by the missionaries of the Bièvres seminary in 1895. This menhir actually comes from the Bois de Vélizy while the triliths are artificial. The place remains impressive, a haven of peace in the middle of the forest to get away from it all during your training.

Listed among the major geological sites since 2007, this former sandstone quarry offers a nice setting for running between rock and sand. The hue of the stone also earns it the name "Blue Rocks".
