Acaya Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Castle of Acaya was built to protect the fortified citadel by Gian Giacomo dell'Acaya, trusted architect of Charles V, who had been entrusted with the strengthening of the defensive walls of Lecce and its castle. He did the same here, between 1521 and 1535, transforming the small agricultural village into a typically Renaissance fortress.

Castro Castle

Highlight • Trail

Once a fortress of strategic importance for the defense of the coast, the Castle of Castro tells the glories of a glorious past. Built in the XVI century on a pre-existing structures (almost certainly on the remains of a Byzantine building used to defense of the fortified Roman village), it's still possible to see a circular tower, a lanceolate bastion, the "Torre del Cavaliere" and some sections of curtain walls. Inside persists a large rectangular courtyard, that once housed the handicrafts and agricultural products that were marketed throughout the Mediterranean. Since 1780 the castle fell into a state of disrepair. After about two centuries of neglect, three distinct architectural recovery interventions were finally carried out over the last twenty years.

Baronial Palace of Collepasso

Highlight • Castle

Among the most fascinating aspects of Puglia there are undoubtedly the large palaces, castles and farms, symbols of a past of nobles and slaves. Among these, the Baronial Palace of Collepasso stands out, of still uncertain origins but whose artistic and historical value is very evident. Built with typical Lecce stone, the clean square shapes date back to the Norman-Swabian domination, while the square in front is very reminiscent of the Spanish "plaza de armas".

When the inhabitants moved here, the hamlet was divided into four residential structures with a central square for the market (still visible today), a well and a defensive watchtower.

Piazza del Popolo, Muro Leccese

Highlight • Historical Site

The built-up area of Muro Leccese has very ancient origins dating back to the Bronze Age. The period of greatest expansion, however, is that of the Messapian era, as evidenced by various archaeological finds. A section of the walls linked to this era is still visible today. The entire village was then destroyed by the Romans in the third century BC and only in the Middle Ages did it again take on an important role in the region.

The origins of the structure date back to the end of the XIII century. In 1480, following the Turkish offensive on Otranto, the Castle of Martano, in which the inhabitants had taken refuge, also suffered considerable damage. Fortunately, the following year, thanks to the reconquest by the Aragonese, the fortress was rebuilt and enlarged. The new construction was joined to the ancient city walls and correlated with five towers, of which only two have survived until today. In the second half of the 1600s, the Trani family transformed the Aragonese Castle into a Baronial Palace by renovating the old façade and creating an entrance door embellished with inclined ashlars. Inside the building, it's possible to admire the remarkable decorations of the staircase, as well as the fascinating majolica flooring and the frescoed vaults. Further stylistic changes and enrichments have continued over the last two centuries in conjunction with the succession of various noble families.

Guarini Castle of Poggiardo

Highlight • Castle

Posted in Salento Fortifications collection komoot.it/collection/1396951/-salento-fortificazioni - The oldest nucleus of the Poggiardo Castle dates back to the 14th century and originally included a cylindrical tower and a building, surrounded by a moat, with essentially defensive and sighting functions. In 1466 it became the property of the Guarini Dukes, Lords of Poggiardo, who expanded the structure over the course of several centuries, progressively transforming it from a fortress into a fortified residential residence. During the seventeenth century the moat was filled, fenced and transformed into a citrus grove while in the following centuries several buildings were built on part of it, on whose roof a beautiful terrace was created [source: lavocedimaruggio.it /wp/fortresses-and-castles-of-puglia-the-guarini-of-poggiardo- castle.html]

A beautiful castle with a suggestive façade adorned with numerous statues. Inside the very interesting exhibition of Giuseppe Palumbo, the photographer on a bicycle who documented Salento between 1907 and 1959 and in the various rooms an exhibition path with original images, articles and studies dedicated to the phenomenon of tarantism. A short distance away in the enchanting historic center of Corigliano d'Otranto is the church of San Nicola Vescovo with a valuable mosaic depicting the tree of life.
