There are a lot of elevation changes so some good fitness here will be required. As well as the trails there are a number of fire roads, bridleways and a bike path so great for some gravel riding too.
Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre is one of two parking and start areas for the trails. From here you can ride The Rookie, Blue Scar, Penhydd and Y Wal and W2 mountain bike trails.
There is also a cafe, bike shop and bike hire, toilets and showers. Parking is paid.

The sheltered, tranquil aquamarine waters offers the kind of scene that you might associate with the glacial lakes of the Italian Dolomites rather than the nearby Port Talbot steel works that most people picture when thinking of this area.
Originally the site of a colliery supplying the nearby copper works at Taibach. After the colliery was closed mine was then flooded. The reservoir is over 100ft deep.

Continuing to rise harshly past a couple of houses it’s not too long before you reach the gentle middle section. Take the chance to catch your breath here as before you know it the second ramp arrives to take you to the top.
Longer than the first hard stretch but not quite as steep it begins abruptly then fades as you approach the summit. Passing over a small bridge, the trees either side recede and the houses of Cimla begin before you arrive at the top at the small crossroads.

Wonderful campsite secluded in the Afan Valley. Great, flat camping field, excellent facilities including a communal seating area, wood fired sauna & plunge pool. It’s also well situated to access hiking & bikng trails.
