July 28, 2025, Salcey Forest Café

A convenient stop with easy access to toilets and great ice cream. It’s ideal for a quick refill, though be prepared for long queues at the counter. The paninis and sandwiches aren’t the best, but it serves its purpose.

Lovely walk to see the snowdrops and have a hot sausage roll and a cuppa in the cafe. There is an entrance fee. Check their website.

The Canal Museum, Stoke Bruerne is a great place to learn about the history of the canals and the people who worked on them. The museum is housed in a historic corn mill and offers visitors a chance to see how canals were built and operated. The museum also has a cafe, a gift shop, and a boat trip. It is open Tuesday through Saturday. Admission to the museum is free. Plenty of cycle stands outside the museum and cafe.

This old bridge sits over the remnants of an old regional railway line that used to run to/from Towcester and join up with the Northampton to Bedford line near the Yardley Hastings ammo depot. The tracks themselves are long gone but peering over the sides you can see the remains of the old track bed with trees either side going off into the distance.

Fairly popular cafe for Salcey Forest walkers and wheelers alike. Plenty of outdoor seating for nice days (or if you're a bit muddy from the forest!) and there's a bike hire centre too. https://groundscafe.uk/salcey/

Coming down the bridleway from either side brings you to a fford crossing. Surface below the water is loose gravel & pebbles, water depth varies dependent on rainfall (anywhere between 6 to 10 inches) but it is passable on a bike with care. E-bikers may wish to exercise caution!! There is a sketchy stepping stone footbridge off the the side if you don't fancy getting wet feet!
