Easy hiking trails around Volkspark Jungfernheide traverse Berlin's second-largest park, offering a significant green space within the city. The landscape features expansive grassy areas, dense forests, and small lakes and streams, providing varied terrain for walkers. The park's low elevation gain, with hills under 200m, ensures accessible routes suitable for all skill levels. Hikers can explore a mix of wider and narrower paths, primarily forested, that contribute to the park's role as a "green lung" for the urban environment.

Romantic View Let your gaze wander into the distance to the shelter and enjoy the peace and nature around you. This is exactly what landscape architect Erwin Barth envisioned more than 100 years ago. And because everything has been so wonderfully designed, the entire Jungfernheide Public Park is a garden monument, which is particularly cherished and cared for by the Parks Department. May we introduce: Nymphaea alba Its beauty has always inspired famous painters. The white water lily (Nymphaea alba) is native to Central Europe and can also be found in the Jungfernheide Pond. From May to September, it produces fragrant white flowers that can grow up to 12 cm in size. The yellow stamens release abundant pollen, which attracts flies, reed beetles, and bumblebees. According to legend, water lilies are guarded by mermaids who drag anyone who tries to pick them into the depths. While this is (probably) not true, the lesson of the story is still very relevant: Water lilies are protected and may not be picked! Naturally planned The Jungfernheide Pond is a man-made body of water fed by the Nonnengraben ditch from the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal. In the area of the lido, the lake is also enriched with groundwater during the bathing season to improve the water quality. Please note: You can splash and swim to your heart's content at the Jungfernheide lido. Swimming is not permitted in the other sections of the Jungfernheide Pond! Sparkling Aerial Acrobats Numerous animals find a home in, on, and under the water. One of them is the dragonfly. These creatures are not only beautiful to look at, but can also accomplish amazing feats. They are characterized by an aerodynamically optimized, slender body and a highly efficient flight mechanism. They have two pairs of wings that move independently of each other. They can reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour, change direction in a flash, fly backward, or hover in mid-air like a helicopter. Also noteworthy: The veining of their wings is as unique as a fingerprint – no two individuals have completely identical wings. On the way to Station 7, you might spot beaver traces. These could be gnawed or even fallen tree trunks, or trees whose trunks have been fenced off to protect them from the beavers' sharp teeth.

Climbing in the Treetops Whether you're aiming for peak athletic performance, looking for an interesting excursion, or simply want to spend some quality time with friends or family, the forest high ropes course offers the opportunity for all ages. Protecting the trees – predominantly beech, black locust, oak, and birch – is our top priority. Shelter for Wild Animals Here, great importance is placed on promoting biodiversity! That's why, in addition to so-called insect hotels, you'll also find Benjes hedges as natural boundaries along the paths. Made of overlapping branches and twigs, they provide habitat and shelter for birds, hedgehogs, lizards, and insects. Drum Roll for the Great Spotted Woodpecker Why do great spotted woodpeckers peck holes in tree trunks with their beaks? They're looking for food or building nesting holes! But the good news: They don't attack healthy trees, but rather seek out trees that are rotten and soft. Their diet consists primarily of wood-dwelling insects such as bark beetles, so they help keep them under control. Architectural Highlight The 38-meter-high water tower is the architectural highlight of the complex. Its original purpose was to supply the 146-hectare garden with water. This expressionist work of art was built from iron clinker brick according to the designs of architect Walter Helmcke and features sculptural decorations and a copper roof. The tower was damaged in World War II and restored in the 1980s. Numerous sightlines allow views of the tower from various locations in the park – you can see it from almost anywhere! The Kestrel Today, the water tower houses a summer garden and, in the upper third, some very special guests: For several years, kestrels have been nesting there regularly. A webcam provides insights into their nursery. It films from above through a hole without disturbing the birds. The transmission begins every spring, just in time for the breeding season.
