Suur Munamägi Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

Day 8. A 390km day driving day from the University city of Tartu in Estonia to the castle town of Cesis in Latvia. On the way I learned from a smart arse that 55% of the roads in Latvia are gravel tracks. That’s over 11,000k’s worth of gravel and today we found at least 200 kilometres worth.
En route today we had a ‘look see’ at opulent Cesvain Palace before going on to hike…sorry…have a lazy amble up the highest point in Estonia (Suur Munamagi 318m) and Latvia (Gaizinkalns 311m). If both hikes had a combined height of over 100m I’d be lying but they all count. World Country High Points no’s 26 & 27 done 😇.

Vastseliina Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

Originally a castle of the Livonian Order, later a castle of the Diocese of Courland. It was part of a chain of castles from Hasenpoth Castle to Amboten Castle.
The castle was 10-15 metres high and was located on the right bank of the Vaipa River, which made access from the south difficult. Neuhausen was a camp fort typical of Courland, measuring 61 metres square. Remains of a courtyard wall and cellar depressions have been preserved in front of the south-east wall. Like all Courland camp forts, Neuhausen was a simple functional building, mainly made of fieldstone.
Today the remains are being renovated and made accessible to visitors.

Hinni Canyon

Highlight • Canyon

The canyon lies in a special protection zone of the Haanja Nature Park and is the only canyon valley in Estonia.

The Enni River has carved out a 15-20 m deep and 300 m long cut from the Devonian sandstone.

On the steep slopes of the V-shaped valley, there is an outcrop of white or yellowish sandstone over a circumference of almost 200 m in the form of 5-6 m high vertical walls and cliffs. Fallen trees, a small spring cave and a path that quickly narrows are typical.

On the map it looks as if you could do a circular route, but that is not recommended because, despite mosquito repellent spray, the insects at the end of the wooden walkway become really annoying.

The bridge and the stairs that follow are problematic for dogs because of the size of the bars. Only dogs with large paws can walk reasonably well here.

We sat in the car and had a snack while it rained. During a brief break in the rain, we climbed this "stork's nest." It's a great construction.

To add a further highlight to the highest point in the Baltics, an impressive observation tower was built here. It features an elevator that takes visitors to the top.
