Tips from the Community

Alex Foxfield
August 4, 2026, View of Stob Dearg and Stob a'Ghlas Choire from Kingshouse

Thought to be Scotland's most photographed mountain, the view of Buachaille Etive Mòr's Stob Dearg peak as seen from the Kingshouse is simply magnificent. The epitome of Highland grandeur, the great cliffs are home to countless superb scrambling, mountaineering and rock climbing routes. Whether you're taking on the West Highland Way, staying at the famous Kingshouse Hotel or simply driving on the A82, it's an image you won't forget. Also impressive are the crags of Stob a'Ghlas Choire, on the south side of the entrance to Glen Etive.

Imposing landscape. On the West Highland Way, you walk into the valley and out the other side.

The Glencoe Ski Resort is a brilliant base for adventures, with walking, running and mountain bike trails in the summer and ski runs in the winter. There is a café and other facilities at the centre and accommodation on site. The West Highland Way trail passes close to the centre and makes a very easy detour. This is mile 71 (114 km) and acts as checkpoint five of the West Highland Way Race.

Just before the Kingshouse Hotel is a small block with public toilets and showers, open to the public. You can use them as you pass through or even camp just 5 minutes before.
