Luca N.
May 16, 2026, St Mark's Clocktower (Torre dell'Orologio), Venice

Overlooking the monumental Piazza San Marco, the Clock Tower is one of Venice's most famous architectural landmarks, a Renaissance masterpiece created at the end of the 15th century by Mauro Codussi. Conceived as a monumental triumphal arch leading into the mercerie (shops), the tower combines engineering ingenuity with the political celebration of the Serenissima. Its centerpiece is the extraordinary astronomical clock in gold and blue enamel, which has been marking time, lunar phases, and zodiacal movements for centuries. Immediately above, the niche with the Madonna and Child precedes the majestic Lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of the State. Crowning the building, on the top terrace, stand the two gigantic bronze statues of the "Mori", so called because of the dark patina of the metal. The figures strike the hours with a large mallet on the bell: the old Moor first, symbolizing past time, and the young Moor five minutes later, representing the future.

The Church of San Rocco, located in the square of the same name in the San Polo district, is one of the most significant and frequented places of worship in Venice. Built at the end of the 15th century to celebrate Saint Roch, protector against the terrible plague epidemics that struck the city, it still houses the saint's remains. The splendid current facade, in a late Baroque style and rich in sculptures, was created in the second half of the 18th century by Bernardino Maccaruzzi, who was inspired by the nearby and monumental Scuola Grande di San Rocco. The interior, with a single nave, is a true treasure chest of art, dominated by an extraordinary series of canvases signed by Jacopo Tintoretto, which narrate the life of the titular saint. Every year, on August 16th, the church becomes the focal point of a historic celebration: on this occasion, the facade is traditionally protected by an imposing canopy of wood and fabric to welcome the procession of the highest city authorities.

Il Ponte dei Pugni, located in Dorsoduro near Campo Santa Margherita, is one of the most curious and historically rich places in Venice. Its name derives from an ancient and violent tradition that, between the 14th and 18th centuries, saw the two city factions, the Castellani and the Nicolotti, pitted against each other. These factions engaged in real bare-knuckle fights right on the bridge's summit, with the aim of throwing their opponents into the waters of the canal below. Even today, at the corners of the bridge's summit, four white Istrian stone footprints are visible, which marked the starting position of the fighters. At the time, the bridge lacked side railings, making a fall into the water a very frequent outcome. These "Fist Fights" were definitively banned in 1705 due to their excessive danger, but the bridge remains a tangible testament to Venetian verve and historical rivalries.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta represents the monumental heart of Chioggia, located at the southern end of Corso del Popolo. Rebuilt in the 17th century based on a design by Baldassarre Longhena after a fire destroyed the medieval building, the church features an imposing and sober facade, while the interior is a celebration of Venetian Baroque. The internal space is marked by wide naves housing pictorial masterpieces by artists such as Palma il Giovane and Pietro Liberi. Next to the cathedral stands the 64-meter-high Romanesque bell tower, on top of which is a lantern that historically served as a reference point for sailors. This complex is not just a religious center, but an architectural symbol that blends the solemnity of faith with the maritime history of the city.

The former Scuola Grande di San Marco is located in Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, and its façade significantly influences the Campo and its immediate surroundings. This magnificent scuola is a building from the Venetian Early Renaissance. The Confraternity of Saint Mark is an institution founded around 1260 with the mission of counterbalancing the expansive foreign policy of the Venetian government through social work under the name of the patron saint of the Republic (Saint Mark). After the fire of 1485, the Confraternity's headquarters, the "Scuola Grande di San Marco," was rebuilt. Today, the building serves as the main entrance to the Ospedale Civile SS. Giovanni e Paolo di Venezia (Civil Hospital of Saints John and Paolo of Venice).

The Cathedral of Chioggia (Italian: Dom di Chioggia, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) is the main church in Chioggia, Italy, located in the southern part of the Venetian Lagoon. It dates back to 1627. The Baroque Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is also the cathedral of the Diocese of Chioggia and the largest building in the city of Chioggia in Veneto. An initial structure on the site was completed in 1110. From 1623 to 1674, it was reconstructed by the architect Baldassare Longhena, although the façade remains unfinished. Inside the church, there are many interesting works of art by renowned Venetian artists. https://www.venediginformationen.eu/inseln-der-lagune/insel-chioggia/chioggia-dom/chioggia-dom.htm
