July 2, 2026, Bead lake number 4

Fourth of the Bead Lakes along the scenic Bead Lakes Trail that passes through old boreal forest. Officially there are 4 lakes, but you actually only pass directly by the 1st, 3rd and 4th. It's recommended to carry bear spray and make constant noise along this trail, especially in May and June when bears and their cubs can often be seen foraging in the area.

It's recommended to carry bear spray and make constant noise along this trail, especially in May and June when bears and their cubs can often be seen foraging in the area.

It's hard to imagine that the waters of this little oblong pond eventually, and lazily, make their way into Lake Superior almost 500 kilometres away. You get a great view of the mirrored pines and water lilies from the trail.

The Centennial Trail splits three ways here. North takes you to Highway 44; the other two paths explore further into a network of peaceful marshes and lakes that the Centennial Trail tours as it parallels the main highway.

This red arched bridge leads you across the creek by a small pond to a viewpoint of Hansons Creek. Keep an eye out on the west side of the bridge for a short spur trail that leads to a waterfall.

Brokenhead Wetland Ecological Reserve protects 1,240 hectares of rare wetland habitat in southeastern Manitoba, including one of the few calcareous fens in North America. The reserve is home to more than 20 provincially rare or uncommon plant species, including 28 native orchids and eight carnivorous plants, like pitcher plants and sundews. Long used by the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation for gathering medicinal plants and practicing traditional land use, the area remains a vital place for both biodiversity and cultural heritage, with public access available via the nearby interpretive boardwalk trail.

November 12, 2025, Brokenhead Wetland Trail

The Brokenhead Wetland Trail is a unique boardwalk path that winds through a rare mix of boreal forest, cedar swamp, and calcareous fen, one of the rarest types of wetland in North America. Along the way, interpretive signs share the deep cultural knowledge of the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, whose members have long gathered medicinal plants, hunted, and fished in this area. The trail offers a quiet, educational walk through one of Manitoba’s most biologically diverse wetlands, home to pitcher plants, native orchids, and more than 20 rare or uncommon species.
