The Ösel is a 156-meter-high hill southeast of Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony, also referred to as the Öselberg on maps. The Ösel is located five kilometers southeast of the core city of Wolfenbüttel in the Neindorf area, which is part of the municipality of Denkte. There are two hill ranges in the surrounding area. The Asse lies about three kilometers to the northeast, and the Oderwald forest about four kilometers to the west on the other bank of the Oker River. The hill, which rises about 70 meters above the surrounding landscape and has been designated a landscape conservation area since 1966, is covered with extensive grasslands for almost two kilometers in length and one in width. This nutrient-poor grassland, created by intensive sheep farming, represents a historic landscape that was once characteristic of large parts of the East Brunswick Hills. A sparse tree population covers only the eastern slope, while shrubs and bushes fill the edges and depressions of the numerous former limestone quarries. In some areas, very old cherry trees can be found. (Source: Wikipedia)
