Thanks to its shape and acoustics, up to 30 people can whisper secrets from one end to the other – the sound is directed along the bench, allowing for quiet and 'eavesdrop-proof' conversations. This is comparable to classic whispering galleries (such as the whispering arch in Görlitz).

The image shows the Luisentor. At 31 meters, it is the second highest city gate in Pomerania, after the Anklamer Steintor. It was the highest and most important gate of the Demmin fortification, because it secured the unprotected east side – the side from which most attacks came.

The so-called Zille House used to stand at this spot. Margarete Köhler-Zille (1884–1977) lived there, the daughter of the famous Berlin draftsman, graphic artist, and photographer Heinrich Zille (1858–1929, known as “Pinselheinrich”). There is a bust of Heinrich Zille, an information board, benches, and trees in the square. It commemorates the former resident and the family connection to the artist.

It was first mentioned in 1546 as a "gloomy cellar". It was completed in 1570/71. To entice the bricklayers for the work, which was considered not very honorable, the city council donated seven barrels of beer. It was located next to the executioner's residence and also served as a prison. The pastor and chronicler Wilhelm Karl Stolle described it in 1772 as follows: "is used as a prison for miscreants, but has now been walled up a few years ago". The use as a prison thus ended around the middle of the 18th century.

The ensemble of three centuries has a defining urban impact and is one of the few surviving historical buildings in Demmin (the city was heavily destroyed in 1945). The harbor itself has largely lost its former economic importance for freight handling; since around 2008, hardly any transport has taken place via water.
