The forest dates back to the time of historical coppice management. To simultaneously obtain firewood and use grazing areas for livestock, the hornbeams were traditionally pruned at a height of about 2 meters ("geschneitelt"). Through this regular pruning every 15 to 18 years, the trees acquired their today's rustic and almost magical appearance. Many people have sponsored the trees, a truly beautiful idea.
