A beautiful view of Beilstein from the Bruttig Fankel hiking trail to Beilstein. At the apex of the Cochem Bend lies the small winegrowing village of Beilstein, the epitome of Moselle Romanticism. Beilstein once even held town privileges, was well fortified, and for a long time could only be reached by water. The imperial fortress above the village and the town fortifications were blown up in 1689 at the height of the French conquest campaigns of the 17th century. The Metternich Castle ruins, with their pentagonal keep, house a restaurant and offer a magnificent view over Beilstein, nestled in the valley below, and far beyond the Moselle River. Since the Middle Ages, the Lords of Beilstein had issued letters of protection to Jews in exchange for payment, permitting them to settle there. The village owes a good part of its prosperity to this policy. The entire Beilstein ensemble is a protected historical monument. This picturesque Moselle village has served as a film location on numerous occasions since the 1930s. The town's centerpiece is the market square, which Johann von Braunshorn had laid out in 1322. Grouped around it are the old tithe barn (considerably darker and more imposing than a modern tax office), the former St. Christopher's Church, and the Metternich Court, built in 1727 and now a hotel. The entire town consists of charming buildings that form attractive clusters and are connected by narrow lanes and staircases. Also worth seeing are the former synagogue and, in the imposing church, the miraculous image of the Black Madonna, left behind by Spanish occupying forces in the 17th century. The Moselle Valley is as beautiful as advertised. Near Valwig, the elevation difference becomes apparent – on the left, it's a real hill, while on the right, it slopes down to a flat landscape.
