History The Maria Winkling pilgrimage chapel is located in the village of Maria im Winkl (Winkling) in the town of Steyr in Upper Austria. During the great Enns flood in 1736, which severely devastated the lower Enns valley, a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary was washed up here in Winkling, on the Enns loop near Haidershofen, just after the town of Steyr. Because the owner could not be identified, Andreas I, Abbot of Gleink, had it placed on a pillar by the river. A lively regional pilgrimage developed around the image of the Virgin Mary, later called Mary in Glory. Therefore, a small wooden chapel was built above the shrine, which was replaced by the current stone chapel in 1773-1775. Instead of a cross, the chapel's turret originally had a metal plaque in the shape of a bishop's hat, on which Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of raftsmen and shipping, was painted. This figure looked upstream as a landmark. It became common practice for Enns rafters to take off their hats for a short prayer when they approached the chapel before they had to row through the dangerous river loop with its steep, jagged banks made of conglomerate rock and swells. This plaque was replaced by a cross in 1962. The name of the chapel was also given to the town of Winkling itself, which is now called "Maria im Winkl". When the Staning power station was built in 1946, the swells of the Enns loop were drowned. The level of the reservoir known as "Staninger See" now reaches right up to the chapel. When the power station's reservoir was increased in size, the chapel was extensively founded and renovated in 1982 with the involvement of Ennskraftwerke AG. A memorial plaque commemorates this. To this day, the pilgrimage is held twice a year (Sundays at the beginning of May and at the beginning of October) from the Gleink Abbey Church, with flag bearers and a band.

Highly recommended section of the Enns cycle path. Although partly gravel, it is easy to drive on with trekking bikes. Rewarded for the kilometers previously on the road.

The parish church of St. Severin is surrounded by the old cemetery. The keyholes in the western wall are still a reminder of the town's former fortifications. The three-aisled, late Gothic hall church was probably built before the year 1000 and was consecrated in 1452. The "Dollfuss window" in the church is unique. https://haidershofen.gv.at/Seeing
