The craftsman village at the Hexenturm in Rüthen was built in 2007 by the Rüthener Förderverein Heimatpflege u. traditionelles Brauchtum (Rüthen Association for Homeland Care and Traditional Customs) based on the model of medieval building workshops. In the complex of buildings, the history of old, typical, and almost extinct trades (stone carvers, blacksmiths) is vividly presented. Framed by monuments of different eras (Hexenturm) and functions (Alte Seilerei - Old Rope Factory), fine arts workshops (painting, sculpture, object design, etc.) take place annually in the summer. https://www.sauerland.com/de/neusta-pois/historisches-handwerkerdorf

Rüthen's historic city wall... "The 14th-century fortification connected four city gates and eleven towers with a city wall. The entire city wall was about 3000 meters long. The facility was used to protect the inhabitants, e.g. during the Soester Fehde, the Thirty Years' War, or in battles waged by territorial lords against each other, and to fend off robber knights. The walls were between 1.20 meters and 1.80 meters wide and about 3.00 meters to 3.50 meters high. The thickness of the wall tapered towards the top, where the rampart walk was protected by a wall crown, interrupted by observation and firing slits. In places where the city, due to its location on a mountain spur, was not protected by steep drops but transitioned into open land, double ditches were additionally constructed. From the city fortifications, the Hachtor gate and the semi-circular Hexenturm (Witches' Tower), as well as extensive remains of the city wall, have been preserved. Today, the former city wall is a circular path around the historic city center that invites you to visit it. You will always find new insights into Rüthen's history and the Ansberger Wald Nature Park with its many idyllic spots. https://www.tourismus-ruethen.de/de/neusta-touren/ruethen-stadtmauerrundgang

The striking 14th-century Witch Tower is one of the most impressive relics of Rüthen's medieval town fortifications. Despite its name, it did not serve as a site for witch trials, but rather as a prison tower for common criminals for centuries. Today, it houses a compelling exhibition on the history of witch persecution in the Sauerland region – a topic that has particularly shaped Rüthen, as more than one hundred people fell victim to the Inquisition here. The exhibition displays replicas of historical interrogation instruments, highlights individual fates such as that of Grete Eickhoff, and commemorates Friedrich Spee and Michael Stapirus, who spoke out against these cruel practices early on, with a bronze relief. The tower thus combines authentic architecture, regional history, and a poignant reminder to create a truly impressive visitor destination. https://www.nrw-stiftung.de/entdecken/foerderprojekte/hexenturm-ruethen.html
