Since the 1980s, flamingos have come to Zwillbrocker Venn during the breeding season, raise their young, and spend the winter months in the Netherlands. Initially, only the Chilean Flamingo bred here in the 1980s, then the Greater Flamingo was added. Meanwhile, in April and May, it is usually possible to observe over 50 flamingos of this Western European population in Zwillbrocker Venn.

The Lachmöwensee is the heart of the Zwillbrocker Venn nature reserve in the western Münsterland, right on the Dutch border. It is home to Westphalia's largest black-headed gull colony and the world's northernmost flamingo breeding colony.
