The first weekend of September sees the celebration of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, better known as the Feast of Bom Jesus, one of the oldest and most popular pilgrimages in Madeira, a tradition dating back to the 16th century. In this spirit, the Pilgrim Square was built as a tribute to all those who travel to this parish to express their devotion. The fountains and laundresses recall the past when women went to the parish wells to wash their laundry. The wine press recalls the parish's winemaking tradition. The "Until the Baskets Are Washed, It's Harvest" event takes place in this square in October. The route back along the coast from São Christovao to Ponta Delgada should be approached with extreme caution. There have apparently been some severe landslides recently, and parts of the route are covered in debris and boulders. Therefore, you must keep a close eye on the rocks above you and proceed with caution. Avoid using the path in windy or rainy conditions.
