The Juncal viewpoint is located right near the starting point at Pico do Areeiro and immediately offers one of the most expansive views over the eastern part of Madeira. From this plateau, on clear days, you can look all the way across the jagged mountain ridges to the dry peninsula of Ponta de São Lourenço and the ocean. A fun fact is that 'juncal' refers to the rushes and hardy grasses that survive here at high altitudes in the sparse, volcanic soil. The viewpoint is also a fantastic place to watch the sunrise, when the first rays of sunlight slowly bring the deep valleys of Fajã da Nogueira out of the shadows.

The Pico do Areeiro Trail is the classic among mountain routes on the island and forms the starting point for the famous hike towards the highest peak of Madeira. From the viewing platform at an altitude of 1818 meters, you look out over a wild landscape of jagged volcanic peaks and deep ravines. A striking fact is that on the top of Pico do Areeiro there is a prominent, large white sphere; this is an important radar station of the Portuguese Air Force that has been monitoring the airspace over the Atlantic Ocean since the nineties. Even if the valley below is shrouded in mist, here on the trail you are often above the cloud cover in full sun.
