Since the crash of the funicular (with several deaths) in autumn 2025, the lift has been completely shut down. At the same time, for safety reasons, (almost) all funiculars in Lisbon and the Santa Justa lift were shut down to carry out safety checks!

The cathedral is located in the former complex of a Discalced Carmelite monastery, known as the Convent of Our Lady of the Remédios or the Convent of the Marianos. Construction of the monastery began in 1606 and was completed in 1611. It was built in the Mannerist architectural style and, in its simplicity, conforms to the rules of the Discalced Carmelite Order. After the suppression of the order and the dismissal of the monks, the complex was converted into barracks for the 17th Battalion of the Portuguese National Guard in 1835, and from the following year it was used as the headquarters of the police station. In 1872, the building was put up for sale at public auction and acquired by the Presbyterian Free Church of Scotland, which generated considerable controversy due to the religious issue. In 1898, the complex was acquired by the Portuguese Anglican Lusitanian Church, and part of it was converted into the church's headquarters.
