June 21, 2024, Lake Kushaqua

Lake Kushaqua is a beautiful 380-acre lake on the North Branch of the Saranac River. The lake is set in a tranquil valley, surrounded by woodlands. Buck Pond Campsite Road runs along the banks of the lakes and gives you access to the water if you want to take a dip.

Little Haystack Mountain gives you outstanding views of the valley below. The trail to get up starts easy, but gets steeper as you approach the top. However, it is definitely work the effort to get the great views from the peak.

Fish Creek Pond (to the north and east), together with Square Pond (to the south and west), forms the centerpiece of Fish Creek Pond Campground. You'll find lots of sandy shoreline and water access around the lake, but be aware that motorized boat traffic is allowed, so just how peaceful it is may vary.

Coney mountain is located right on the border of Hamilton and Franklin counties. There is a relatively new well marked trail up Coney which gently meanders around the mountain, instead of climbing straight up it. Coney Mountain is also part of the Tupper Lake Hiking Triad. It is a super good hike with a stunning panoramic view.

In good weather, you can safely run the whole loop as a round. After several rainy days the northeastern part was too wet for jogging.
