July 17, 2025, Topsail Hill Preserve Beach

This is a great State PArk. Even though you are minutes away from very busy crowded tourist areas this park makes you feel like you are out in the wild. The camping here looked awesome and they have Cabins. They have a shuttle to the beach over paved roads that only the shuttle and bicycles can use! High light of my trip!

The Florida Trail spans 45 miles across this military base, and access to these sections requires hikers to check the Public Access Map (PAM) daily for potential closures due to military activities. Thru-hikers whose journey originates more than 50 miles outside the base boundary must contact the Jackson Guard for their free permits to cross this area.

They have 3 loops of trail that are marked with yellow (shortest) red (medium) and orange (longest) blazes on the trees that are easy to follow. Various surfaces will be encountered on the trails, good old dirt as well as sands of the white, gray and yellow varieties. The yellow is the most trustworthy beneath your wheels. The gray is almost always good but can be a bit soft in spots and loose in a corner. The white should be met with some hesitation, it shifts quickly. Riding tip, shift rearward and put more weight on your rear wheel, try and pedal smoothly with even pressure and lighten the front wheel so it floats on top of the sands.
