The sheer size of the fortress alone shows that Castelsardo, located some 70 kilometers southwest of Alghero, must have once been very important. In the 12th century, the Doria family – a large noble family from Genoa – had a soft spot for the small settlement overlooking the strait between Sardinia and Corsica. Commissioned by the Maritime Republic of Genoa, they fortified the village, built on a protruding headland, in 1101 and 1102. It was during this period that the name Castel Genovese became established. Due to its strategically important location in the Gulf of Asinara, Castelsardo was always a target of conquerors. It was only in 1448 that the Spanish conquered the town and promptly renamed it Castello Aragonese. The name Castelsardo was chosen by Charles Emmanuel III, Duke of Savoy and King of Sardinia. With the Treaty of London, the city passed to the House of Savoy in 1720.

The castles in the Tàtari/Sassari region are rich in history, reflecting Sardinia's past under various ruling powers. Many, like the Castello dei Doria, were built by powerful families for defense, while others, such as the Castello di Burgos, served as crucial strongholds during medieval times, witnessing battles and political intrigue. Coastal towers like Torre Bantine Sale (Torre Mozza) were vital for defending against Saracen incursions.
Many castles offer spectacular views due to their strategic elevated positions. From Torre della Pegna, you can enjoy wonderful sea views after a climb. Yes, the Castello Malaspina in Bosa stands out for its unique artistic treasures. Given that many castles involve walking, sometimes on uneven terrain or up hills, comfortable and sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Layers of clothing are also advisable, especially during spring and autumn, as temperatures can vary. For sunny days, particularly when visiting castles with little shade like the Castello di Burgos, bringing water and sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is essential.

However, others, such as the Castello di Burgos, are accessible by foot with paths leading to the main tower.
