Kökar Ferry Terminal

Highlight • Rest Area

Kökar is a scenically beautiful island with a hotel, restaurants, a guest harbor, a folklore museum and a very convenient self-service shop open 24 hours a day.

It has 223 inhabitants, of whom about 95 percent are Swedish-speaking, and an area of 63.94 square kilometers, of which 0.39 square kilometers are inland waters. As in all of Åland, Swedish is the official language. In the far south of the Åland Islands lies the Kökar archipelago, which consists of a larger island surrounded by thousands of smaller islands. The main island has about 250 inhabitants and has been inhabited for about 3000 years. The first inhabitants were probably seal hunters. Kökar's waters have always been rich in fish and where there are fish, there are seals. For hundreds of years, fishing has been the most important industry. Locals sailed to the fish markets in Stockholm and Turku to sell their catch and exchange it for needed goods. People here have always been self-sufficient.

Kökar is also known for the Franciscan monastery that stood here in the Middle Ages. Today, Franciscan Days are held every year in July to celebrate the saint.

May 16, 2026, Svinö–Degerby Ferry Terminal

As of May 2026, you need to pay a fare for a bike/car when going to Föglö/Degerby. If you go to the harbour on Svinö side, just park with your car in queue, ticket controllers will come to your car and you scan a QR-Code which leads to a website from Alandstrafiken where you need to create an account, follow the steps, and pay (Credit Card required!). The return from Degerby to Svinö is already included. In the future a camera system will be installed that will register the cars plate. But when — no one knows.

In the writings the village is mentioned in the 15th century, but the village was probably already in the 12th-13th century. Century inhabited, like other villages in Lumparland. In the northwest, Svinö borders Krogstad Bay. There was once a strait from which you could go directly to Västerfjärdet. In the 15th century there was sometimes a bridge over the strait. Old documents show that there was also a bridge over the strait in the 17th century, because Lemland wanted to build a new chapel in Lumparland in Svinöhö, so that the people in Lemland, especially the people living there, would have a shorter route to the church in the villages of Granboda, Haddnäs and Vessingsboda. In Svinö, there was no new church, and it was assumed that this was due to the protests of the population of Lumparland, as they themselves would have had a longer journey to church. Of course, the people of Svinö have always had good relations with Lemland, in particular
