A great destination for an outing from the end of August to the beginning of October, when the Calluna or summer heather blooms

The two winding towers are located right behind the shopping center. One of the winding towers was under reconstruction when we were here. At least, there was massive work going on.

Super great idea and a real highlight of the region. Whoever looks closely will see at which points the bridge is movable and can slightly change its shape.

The Meuse near Maaswinkel forms one of the most picturesque and dynamic sections of the River Park Maasvallei. This vast nature reserve of 280 hectares is located in the Belgian municipality of Maasmechelen and is an official flood plain (floodplain) of the river. The historical name 'Maaswinkel' dates back to the Middle Ages, when the Meuse made a sharp bend or 'winkel' (corner) here.

The historical event involving the Messerschmitt Bf 108 in Vucht (Maasmechelen) is known as the Maasmechelen incident (or the Mechelen Incident). On January 10, 1940, a German Messerschmitt Bf 108 Taifun liaison aircraft made an emergency landing here. This incident had major strategic consequences for the course of World War II. The German pilot Erich Hönmanns and his passenger, Major Helmut Reinberger, were flying from Münster to Cologne. Due to dense fog and carburetor freezing, they went off course and the engine failed. They made a successful emergency landing in a meadow along the Meuse river in Vucht, Belgium. Reinberger had a yellow briefcase with him containing the top-secret, original German invasion plans for the Low Countries and France (better known as Fall Gelb). After landing, Reinberger attempted to burn the documents twice. However, the Belgian gendarmerie managed to partially save and secure the papers. The plans immediately reached the Belgian and Allied governments, putting the defense on highest alert. Partly due to this leak, Adolf Hitler decided to postpone the attack and drastically change the strategic attack plan. In memory of this crucial event, there is the Messerschmitt Bf 108 Monument in Vucht.
