St. Eligius Church: a church with scars ⛪ The St. Eligius Church in Westouter has a history dating back to the Middle Ages. The striking Romanesque octagonal east tower largely survived the devastation of the First World War. The bricked-up arch at the bottom still reveals the origin of the former basilica church. The rest of the church was rebuilt in 1922-1923 to a design by Jules Coomans, in the typical yellow polder brick. Around the church lie the Westouter British Cemetery and an impressive bluestone war memorial. A place where centuries of history and the scars of the Great War meet.

St. Eligius Church of Westouter: a church that remained standing ⛪ The St. Eligius Church of Westouter appears at first glance to be a neo-Gothic church, but a closer look reveals a much older story. The octagonal Romanesque east tower largely survived the destruction of the First World War. The bricked-up arch at the bottom still recalls the medieval cruciform church. After the war, the church was rebuilt in 1922-1923 to a design by Jules Coomans, with the typical yellow polder brick. This was not superfluous luxury, as the church had already experienced setbacks: in 1794, a fire destroyed the building, after which it was extended in the early 19th century. Even today, the war is still palpable here. The Westouter British Cemetery lies around the church, and in front of the church stands an impressive bluestone war memorial. A place where centuries of history and the scars of the Great War meet beautifully.

Flandrien Challenge – Gildestraat is a short but fierce calf-biter! Do you see this tile on the asphalt? Then you are at the foot of an official Flandrien Challenge segment! This is your invitation to give it your all on the flanks of the Rodeberg in Heuvelland. What awaits you on the Gildestraat? It is short and powerful! With a length of only 250 meters, this climb seems like a piece of cake on paper, but appearances are deceiving. Steep stretch: the road starts relatively calmly with an average of 8%, but in the second part it shoots up venomously to a maximum gradient of no less than 14%! Perfect launch: This asphalted climb brings you to just before the notorious Baneberg. Ideal for getting your heart rate up sharply for a moment. Golden tip: just before you dive under the trees, quickly look over your shoulder. You will get one of the most beautiful panoramas of the village of Loker for free. Step on it and blaze!

Hoge Voutestraat is climbing and enjoying beautiful views. The Hoge Voutestraat (near Heuvelland/Poperinge) is a delightful, typically West Flemish country road that treats you to a characteristic patchwork of fields and vistas. As you feel the road gently rising, the landscape opens up around you. The street subtly winds upwards between the vast fields. On the left, you often see dense beds of vegetables, on the right, the stubble of the corn harvest, resulting in a different color palette each season. Climbing tip: shift down a gear in time, maintain your pace, and most importantly, don't forget to occasionally look over your shoulder at the wide panorama behind you while climbing!

Poperingse Hopvelden are the 'cathedrals' of the Westhoek! When cycling around Poperinge, you can't miss them: the meters-high, impressive wooden poles and wire networks along which the hop plants climb. This is Flanders' beer region. In spring, you see the shoots shoot up rapidly, in late summer the fragrant hop cones hang ready for picking, and in winter, a mysterious landscape of bare poles remains. A beautiful, typically West Flemish scenery to cycle through! 🚴♂️🍺
