The Airport Lake is a quarry lake and thus an artificially created bathing area. It was created in the 1950s through local gravel mining. With a maximum depth of approximately 34.3 m, the Airport Lake is the deepest lake in Berlin. Due to its depth, the Airport Lake is divided into a high-capacity main basin and a forebay basin (settlement basin). The two basins are separated by an algae barrier, which is intended to limit the entry of undesirable substances (especially nutrients) into the main basin by converting nutrients into biomass (algae) in the forebay basin. The deep water aeration system, installed in 1986, supports biological degradation in the forebay basin and helps prevent oxygen depletion. The lake is approximately 30 hectares in size and has a water volume of approximately 3.6 million m³.

Scenic Loop Ride: S Buch → Gorinsee → Schönwalde → S Buch Start your ride at S Buch station, then enjoy a peaceful pedal through the Buch Forest towards the serene waters of Gorinsee—a great spot for a break or even a quick swim in summer. Continue north to the charming village of Schönwalde bei Wandlitz, where you’ll get a feel for Brandenburg's quiet countryside.
