The Wasserturm Süd (South Water Tower) in Halle is a true landmark of the city and immediately catches the eye. The tower was built between 1897 and 1899 in the brick architecture style, originally to meet the increasing water demand of the growing industrial city. With its approximately 40 meters in height and the distinctive steel container, it actually served as a functioning water tower until 1985. Today, the tower has long been a piece of city history and was creatively redesigned in 2006: The large dome received decorative animal motifs that are reminiscent of the Halle Zoo, which is located very nearby. Since then, it has borne the inscription „Zoo Halle“ and is often used as a point of orientation. Its striking appearance makes it an eye-catcher not only for railway travelers but also for walkers and photographers. Especially in sunshine, the red bricks glow in contrast to the green roof.
