The ‘Drentsche Veen- en Middenkanaal Maatschappij’ started in 1852 with the construction of the Oranjekanaal. The company bought peat land behind Emmen and in the Odoornerveen. In 1854 the canal diggers reached the place where the canal crossed the route from Coevorden to Groningen. This ancient road followed the Ridge of Rolde. This is where the village of Schoonoord eventually arose.

Great route even without a lot of elevation gain. We in Germany could learn a thing or two from that. Super varied, well-maintained trails with the odd highlight (drops, pumps, etc.) along the way. Specially set up for MTB. Super signposted. Would do it again anytime.

Only half of the stones of dolmen D35 remain. Another striking element is that it is located exactly in an east-west direction.
