The remains of the Kunigunde Chapel, situated on a rocky outcrop of Kapellenberg (Chapel Hill), date back to around 1500. The structure replaced an older chapel on the same site. Unused since the Reformation, the late Gothic building was likely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and subsequently fell into ruin. The ruins served as a pilgrimage site until the 18th century. The chapel is named after Empress Kunigunde (980-1033), the wife of Emperor Henry II, next to whom she is buried in Bamberg Cathedral. According to legend, the empress, venerated as a saint, intended to travel from Bamberg to Würzburg. In the dark forests, she and her entourage lost their way and became disoriented. She vowed to have a chapel built on the spot where God showed her the first sign of a human dwelling. Immediately afterward, a light appeared, and she heard the bell of Bullenheim. True to her vow, she had a chapel built on the mountain promontory.
