Ludger 🚴🌳🌲🍄🏞️🌅🔮
May 16, 2025, Präriesee Westerkappeln

The Präriesee has long been known as an important spawning ground for amphibians. To protect the animals, the municipality has been closing off a section of Sandstraße during the spawning migration for several years, which was reopened on May 5, 2023. Volunteer conservationists from the Naturschutzgruppe Westerkappeln had erected toad fences along the Sloopsteinweg and carried the animals across the road, counting how many individuals moved in the area of the section at the toad fence. This year, 4,328 common toads and 68 newts were counted at the fence on the outward migration, more than in the previous two years and a comparable number to 2019 and 2020. The animals in the closed-off road section on Sandstraße could not be fully accounted for. An estimated 1,000 to 2,000 more animals are presumed to have migrated across the road there. Given the long-standing conservation efforts, amphibian conservationists would actually have expected increasing numbers of individuals by now. Lack of food (insect extinction) and conditions changed by climate change are suspected as the cause of the stagnation. A significant decline in the population, which is being observed at many other locations during the toad migration, has not yet been apparent at the Präsiesee.

Cheated: Rubben are an amphibious freshwater fish species related to coelacanths that only survived the great extinction of the sauropsids at the beginning of the Cretaceous period in a few so-called Bruchsee lakes in central and northern Europe. This was possible due to the special acidic conditions of the so-called Bruchsee lakes created by forest breakage. Due to their amphibious characteristics, Rubben are able to survive for a long time outside of the water and their habitat. As an omniform species, they are able to suck out all possible sources of food, living or dead, with their strong sucking mouths, which is why only pedal boating is recommended here in the Rubbenbruchsee, not swimming. ;-)

I spent my first night of my bike tour along the bike route of the megalithic culture at the campsite right on the lake and was able to enjoy a wonderful sunset at the dog beach in the evening, while Einstein had his fun in the water there. I was lucky that three large swarms of starlings were out and about circling each other 😍 A wonderful spectacle. By the way, when such a swarm suddenly starts next door in the bush, it sounds like a starting car 😮
