The mineral resources on the Ahlberg also include brown coal. It was mined at a shallow depth underground in four phases from 1755 to 1925. A first attempt to market Ahlberg coal in 1724 failed because the burning properties were not sufficient to operate a crystal and glassworks. From 1755 onwards, the coal was used not only for domestic purposes, but also for: the graduation tower in Bad Karlshafen, the garrison in Hofgeismar, thirty brandy distilleries and the brickworks on Ahlberg. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the mining of minerals was the exclusive right of the sovereign. Today the mining rights are privately owned. The transport of the coal was complex and was carried out by wagons and, in the final phase of mining, by the Truck to the train station in Immenhausen. Only a few traces of mining on the Ahlberg remain. Shafts, boreholes and cave-ins were filled and surface facilities were dismantled. The solid brick truncated pyramid in front of us is a last relic. It was part of the former shaking mill (screening) of the colliery. Directly next to it to the north was the 29 m deep production shaft and tower. In 1925 the last attempt at coal mining was stopped due to water intrusion and flowing sand.
