Great Eddy is the oldest covered bridge still in operation in Vermont. It was built in 1833 and to this day is one of the main routes in and out of Waitsfield.

Built in 1855, Pine Brook Covered Bridge stands now as it did nearly 180 years ago. Unlike other covered bridges in Vermont, this one hasn't required any reinforcing and will happily take you and your bike across the water, as it would have done for cyclists all that time ago.

Duxbury Window Viewpoint has views of forested mountain peaks and isn't too strenuous of a hike to get to.

How many running routes are available in Camel's Hump State Park?

Camel's Hump State Park offers a diverse network of over 35 running routes. These trails vary in difficulty, providing options for both moderate and more challenging runs through the Green Mountains.

What is the general difficulty level of the jogging trails in Camel's Hump State Park?

The running trails in Camel's Hump State Park are generally considered moderate to difficult. Out of the 38 routes available, 18 are rated as moderate and 20 are rated as difficult. Many routes involve significant elevation gain and varied terrain, including rocky sections and exposed ridgelines, especially closer to the summit.

Are there any family-friendly or easier running options in the park?

While many trails are challenging, the park does offer some less strenuous options. The Running loop from The Battleground is a good example of a difficult route that offers a different experience. For a very gentle option, the Camel's Hump View Trail, though not listed in our specific routes, is a flat, paved, and ADA-accessible 1-mile loop mentioned in regional research, ideal for a less intense jog with views of the mountain.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the running trails?

You can expect a wide variety of terrain. The park is characterized by dense birch, maple, and red spruce forests, with numerous creek crossings. Trails range from relatively gentle, gradual ascents to steeper, rockier sections, and exposed ridgelines, particularly as you approach the iconic Camel's Hump summit.

Are there any long-distance running routes in Camel's Hump State Park?

Yes, for those seeking longer runs, the park offers several options. The Gillett Pond loop from Jonesville is a substantial 10-mile (16.1 km) route. Additionally, a section of Vermont's renowned 272-mile Long Trail traverses the Camel's Hump summit, offering a significant and challenging experience for dedicated runners.

What are some notable natural features or landmarks I might see while running?

The park's centerpiece is the distinctive Camel's Hump mountain itself, the third-highest in Vermont. The summit features 10 acres of rare alpine tundra, a unique ecosystem. From higher elevations, you can enjoy stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding Green Mountains, Lake Champlain, and even distant peaks like Mount Marcy in New York and Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

Is there parking available at the trailheads for running routes?

Yes, trailheads for popular routes like the Monroe Trail (western Huntington side) and Burrows Trail (eastern Duxbury side) typically have parking areas. The park maintains an undeveloped feel, so while parking is available, it's advisable to arrive early during peak times.
