July 26, 2026, Brákin Monument

The town of Borgarnes is historically significant and plays a major role in the famous Egil's Saga. Egill Skallagrímsson – called Egil – is the main character of this saga. In Borgarnes, you can follow Egil's tracks in the Settlement Center (Landnámssetur / The Settlement Center) in a vivid, multimedia way. There is also an exhibition here on the history of the settlement of Iceland – the so-called Landnahme. In memory of the saga hero Egill, all streets in the region have been named after characters from Egil's Saga. On a rock behind the Settlement Center is the monument to Þorgerður Brák, a character from the well-known Egil's Saga. Þorgerður was the wet nurse of the protagonist Egill Skallagrímsson, to whom she saved his life in his childhood, losing her own in the process. She had saved Egill from his angry father, whereupon he turned against her. She fled into the water and tried to save herself by swimming, but was killed by her master with a boulder thrown after her. (Source:https://www.islandzauber.de/island/reiseziele/borgarnes/)

Borgarnes is a nice little town with cafes and restaurants. Ideal starting point for the Silver Circle and the Snaefellsnes peninsula.

This way is less steep then the other way. little bit narrow but nothing too bad. The spot to leave the wider path is easy to miss
