View of the ruins of Paleo Pyli Castle. A magnificent view during the arduous climb.

Great hike with a wonderful view from the mountain village of Zia to the summit with a beautiful chapel below. The trail has an alpine character in places, so it's better to wear sturdy shoes and plan enough time (3-4 hours) as well as enough water (there are no springs etc.) and if necessary, take a jacket etc. in the off-season (cold wind up there)! Have fun 😊

At 846 m, Dikeos is the highest mountain on Kos. The starting point is the small mountain village of Zia, from which it takes around two hours to get to the summit (around 4 km and 500 meters in altitude). The path is partly signposted. Just below the summit is the Dikeos Christos chapel.

For us the most beautiful spot on KOS. It's best to be there early in the morning, the package tourist is just leaving his hotel and we're already sitting up here - alone with the innkeeper, who speaks good English, and his dog. You drink a cup of coffee, look over the blooming oleander bushes at the old fortress, the sea, the islet of Pserimos and let your soul unwind. The climb is not really difficult, but good hiking shoes are helpful. The shorter route is not via the old Palio Pili but from the parking lot straight ahead along the forest path and then a few 100 meters further up to the left.

The castle was built in the 11th century and the location was perfect for the time. You could see all the way to the Ottoman coast, but the fortress was barely visible from the sea and was therefore well protected from pirate attacks. Today only a ruin, but the priceless view remains.

The ruins of the ancient settlement of Pyli lie on the steep slopes of a hill in the Dikeos Mountains. The site is huge and you can easily spend a few hours wandering around the ruins. Also bring suitable footwear!
