St. Elisabeth is a three-aisled neo-Romanesque parish church with two towers and a wide entrance façade. It was built between 1908 and 1910 according to a design by the Düsseldorf architect Josef Kleesattel; the Elisabeth Chapel was designed by Gisbert Dahmen-Wassenberg. St. Elisabeth Church was originally planned as a freestanding church. However, because the site was very close to the lower railway tracks, there were serious doubts about building a church there. Part of this building site was therefore sold. When the decision was finally made to build a church, there was no longer enough space for a freestanding church. So St. Elisabeth Church was integrated into the facade of the houses. It was severely damaged during World War II, but parishioners repaired it after the war. The apse, however, was not reconstructed until 1994; at that time, only a simple wall had been built there as a temporary enclosure.

The first church in Himmelgeist was first mentioned in documents in 904 and was a predecessor of the present church.
