In the 15th century a late Gothic nave with a tower was built, which was extended with a yoke in 1535. In 1866 a new choir was added, which was replaced in 1920 by a neo-Gothic choir designed by Joseph Cuypers. At the end of the Second World War (autumn 1944) the tower was blown up. Jules Kayser was the architect of the renovation.

Between Helden, Kessel, and Maasbree there is an extensive forest area, with a lot of relief, formed by drifting dunes. Most of the forest consists of Scots pine, previously used as mining timber.
