On the edge of the Logistiek Park Waasland, a 6-meter-high flintstone made of corten steel rises: BAKEN. At night, it bathes in a red glow reminiscent of the campfires that early humans used to light here. We know this because extensive archaeological research was carried out before the park was built, uncovering one of Flanders' largest Stone Age sites. The artist couple Niko Van Stichel and Lut Vandebos designed BAKEN with one eye on the past and one eye on the surroundings. In the twenty panels of the work, they laser-cut motifs: a piece of an old floor, a stained-glass window from the village church, a local coat of arms… These are all patterns suggested by residents of the neighboring towns of Kieldrecht, Verrebroek, and Kallo. On Saturday, October 22, 2022, BAKEN was awarded the Wase Erfgoedprijs by Erfpunt and Erfgoedcel Waasland. source: havenwereld.be Anyone familiar with the containers on the roundabout Hazopweg-Steenlandlaan-Keetberglaan, also in the Waaslandhaven, near Kallo, will not be surprised that the same artists were at work here (see https://www.komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/7141234).

In the tunnel there is a fauna strip, strewn with tree branches and stumps to allow amphibians (including the natterjack toad, which lives here) to move safely between the nature zones.

This station, dating from 1910, was once on line 77 Sint-Gillis-Waas - Zelzate and 77a Lokeren - Moerbeke-Waas. After 1960, the station was only used for freight transport, namely for the transport of sugar beet (especially from West Flanders) to the sugar factory in Moerbeke-Waas. At the end of 2007, that transport also stopped and shortly after the factory (Iscal Sugar) closed. Since 2011, the local library has been located in the station (extended with new construction).
