Čerchov, whose German name is "Schwarzkopf", is the highest mountain in the Bohemian Forest. There are two towers and a row of barracks on the summit. One tower is an observation tower built in 1904. The other tower, peppered with listening devices, was used as a reconnaissance post by the Soviets and the Stasi until the fall of the Berlin Wall and later by the Czech army until after 1990. For this reason, it was not permitted to climb to the top of the mountain for a long time. The reconnaissance station is part of a chain of similar listening posts along the German border and continues northwards over Velký Zvon (859 metres), Havran (894 metres) and Dyleň (939 metres).

Just before the top of Čerchov, on the right side, there is a small monument dedicated to the gendarme Karel Dvorak. The border guard died on May 18, 1906, when he fell from a cliff during a night patrol, stabbed his sabre in the leg and bled to death.

The story of gendarme Karel Dvořák: At the beginning of the 20th century, gendarmerie patrols were introduced alternately from Klenčí, Nemanic and Česká Kubica to ensure the safety of the people of Čerchov. On Friday, May 18, 1906, at 6 p.m., the Chetnik racer Karel Dvořák from Nemanice visited the Pasovský smelter in Čerchová. After resting, he made his way to the Capartice at 10 p.m. for another loop. As he was leaving the hut, the housekeeper, Mrs. Mauer, offered him a lantern. He didn't accept this and went into the darkness, which became his undoing. When he did not return at the agreed time the next day, the commander began a search in Nemanice and found the poor man a frozen corpse near the road to Caparty. He bled to death after falling from a high rocky terrace and had severed the veins in his leg with his unsheathed saber. The funeral took place on May 21, 1906 in Nemanice with a great crowd, especially Austrian and Bavarian gendarmes and financiers. A monument was erected to him at the scene of the accident from various collections, which was unveiled on August 17, 1907. [domazlicky.denik.cz]
