Andrea und Huskys 🐺
August 13, 2026, Adalbert Lanna Monument

The monument to Vojtěch Lanna is considered the oldest monument in České Budějovice. It was created between 1866 and 1879 and was financed by public collection. Miraculously, it survived the metal collections during World War II, but was damaged and hidden in 1945. It was only restored and unveiled in 1993. The 6.64-meter-high monument is the work of Franz Pönninger and is adorned with reliefs depicting Lanna's trade and industrial activities. The statue shows Vojtěch Lanna with the attributes of a shipmaster.

With an area of 1.78 hectares, Přemysl Otakar II Square in České Budějovice is the second largest square in the Czech Republic, after the town square in Vysoké Mýto (2.05 hectares). Since January 1, 1991, it has been named after the city founder King Přemysl Otakar II of Bohemia; previously (especially in the 20th century) its name changed frequently. The almost square square with a side length of 133 meters was already laid out when the city was founded in 1265. Around it, eight-meter-wide plots were measured for the construction of burgher houses. Today, there are 48 houses around the square, including the baroque town hall, the Art Nouveau building Puklics House, and the Neo-Renaissance masterpiece Biene Palace.

This is a beautiful bronze monument of an important Czech industrialist who was born here. The statue is surrounded by artistic bronze depictions of real scenes and angels. It is located just a few minutes' walk from the main square, at the entrance to the Lannova Trida shopping district named after him. It is also situated at the end (or beginning) of a beautiful, green park that winds along the canal around the Old Town.

A beautiful city center invites you to linger. I shortened my day trip to enjoy the ambiance of the central square. Here are my photos from my trip.

Adalbert Lanna (Czech: Vojtěch Lanna) was an industrial baron, railway pioneer, and practically the Elon Musk of the 19th century—only with more mustache and less Twitter drama. Born in Budweis (yes, that's a real demonym!), he not only built railways through Bohemia, but also ensured that his hometown had more beer and steam locomotives than inhabitants.
