The original moated castle was built around 1721 by the Russicon family from Basel. Baron Jakob Tillmann von Hallberg, the conference councillor and chief court chancellor at the Electorate of the Palatinate court, acquired the town and the castle in 1737. The property was auctioned in 1815 and came into the possession of the Wolf family from Wachenheim, who expanded it into a farm estate. The moat around the castle was levelled in 1885. The later owner, Albert Bürklin, converted it into a residential and administrative building for the Bürklin-Wolf estate in 1909. The BASF housing company GEWOGE bought the building in 1964, and the municipality of Ruchheim bought it from them in 1970. After Ruchheim was incorporated in 1974, the city of Ludwigshafen became the owner. The old outbuildings were demolished around 1968 and a community center was set up. Today, the former castle is the seat of the mayor of Ruchheim.

The dominant heart of the village is Neuleinigen Castle. She was in 1240 1250 under Count Friedrich III. completed by Leiningen. It is the earliest fortified castle on German soil and was built on the model of the French castles of the Ile de France. With a large courtyard, surrounded by a ring wall, to which buildings were attached on the inside. Today, the picturesque village and its castle ruins offer a fantastic backdrop for musical and culinary events such as the Castle Wine Festival, the Neuleiningen Castle Summer and the Advent market in the streets.
